JAMIE LEIGH DAIGLE
Professor
jamie@thejlfoundation.org
Jamie Leigh Jones is a college professor who holds a Master’s in Business Administration, and a BA in Criminal Justice. Jones advocates for victims of crime committed by US contractors through the JL Foundation hotline, access to civil and criminal justice, resources, and through sexual assault education. Jones has fought against the tort reform movement and its deprivation of the right to trial by jury for the average American in the form of mandatory, binding, pre-dispute, secret arbitration contracts. Jones was sexually assaulted while working in Iraq as a private contractor for KBR/Halliburton and retaliated against after reporting the crime. When jurisdictional loopholes prevented the prosecution of criminal charges, she sought to hold Halliburton accountable for their misconduct in civil court, but a mandatory, binding, pre-dispute, secret arbitration clause buried in her employment agreement threatened to deprive her of her right to a jury trial.

To date, Senator Al Franken’s first bill in the U.S. Senate, in which he successfully prohibited mandatory arbitration clauses passed for sexual assault in government contracts. Senator Al Franken passed this amendment in tribute to Jones calling it “The Jamie Leigh Jones Amendment”.

Congressman Ted Poe (TX-02) and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-28) offered an amendment to the Defense Appropriations Bill requiring defense contractors supporting the missions in Iraq and Afghanistan to report violent crimes committed against or by contracted employees to the Department of Defense and that the information be made public. Congress overwhelmingly approved this amendment by voice vote.

“This is one step in the right direction in bringing justice to victims,” said Poe. “It is important that Americans working overseas know that the long arm of the law doesn’t stop at our borders. The sexual assault case of Jamie Leigh Jones brought to light serious concerns over how our government and US contractors handle criminal activity in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Awards:

On April 10, 2008, Congressman Ted Poe and Congressman Jim Costa (D-CA) joined members of the bipartisan Congressional Victim’s Rights Caucus to honor outstanding individuals that have given their time and service to helping victims. Jones was awarded the Suzanne B. Anthony Public Awareness Award for bringing awareness to the loopholes in criminal prosecution for American military crime victims. The Civil Justice Foundation also awarded Jones their annual Community Champion Award. Jones was also awarded for the “Making A Difference Award” through the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, the “Courage in Action Award” through the American Association of Justice and the” Equality” award from the National Employment Lawyers Association.
